Diasyndesi – 2024
The hexagon is the symbol for interconnectedness (Diasyndesi in Greek). This strong symmetrical shape can be found everywhere in the world around us and you can even find it on the north pole of Saturn!
Bees use this shape for their beehive because this is the way to create as much storage space as possible with as little material as possible. Soap bubbles naturally take on the shape of a hexagon when they are connected to each other.
The shape can also be found in crystals, coral and in molecules. There are even rock formations in the shape of hexagons in Iceland, Ireland and Scotland! This was a great source of inspiration for this art installation.
In ancient cultures (such as those of the Greeks and the Egyptians) this shape is already used in the architecture of temples and in art. They already knew that this shape has a deeper meaning and contributes to harmony and balance. All sides of a hexagon depend on each other for stability and in the same way all aspects of life depend on each other for harmony and balance.
How beautiful it would be if the world were to come back into balance! Interconnectedness with each other and everything that lives. I hope to convey this message with my art installation Diasýndesi.
Diasyndesi was shown during ‘Lichtjesavond’ in Bergen, The Netherlands in 2024 and during Landjuweel festival at Ruigoord in Amsterdam, The Netherlands in 2024.
This installation was co-created by Allround Timmerwerken Scheltinga.
